Ray of Sonshine: The Secret Behind Spurs' New Prolific Attack

Tottenham Hotspur have had a rather turbulent start to the 2024/25 Premier League season. Spurs currently sit seventh in the league, having won four out of eight matches. Despite impressive wins against Manchester United and Brentford, they have been on the wrong end of disappointing scorelines. Perhaps most notably, their 3-2 defeat against Brighton, which saw them concede three goals in less than twenty minutes and lose their 2-0 lead.

Despite being somewhat unimpressive defensively, shipping nine goals, their attack has been fearsome. Scoring eighteen goals already, bettered only by Manchester City’s total of nineteen, Ange’s men are averaging over two goals a game.

Crucial to this has been their star man, Heung-Min Son, who has racked up three goals and two assists despite missing two matches due to injury. Although he takes fewer shots than his teammates, he boasts a 25% goal conversion rate, which displays his world-class goalscoring ability. Son returned from his short spell out with a goal at home to West Ham in Spurs’ 4-1 victory last weekend, and fans will be hopeful that his goalscoring form can continue in their trip away to Crystal Palace this upcoming weekend.

Another invaluable player to the Spurs attack has been James Maddison. Providing two goals and three assists, Maddison has proved how integral he is to this Spurs side. Maddison’s performances ooze with class and creativity. A prime example of this was Spurs’ 3-1 win over Brentford earlier this season. He has shown he can adapt to playing a more profound role within the Spurs midfield, which hasn’t hindered his attacking output. He is an assist king and a ball-winning midfielder who doesn’t shy away from putting tackles to turnover possession for his side. His passing ability is second to none, and he appears to be a joy to play alongside. Maddison has matured, and his footballing IQ has developed massively. His positional awareness is outstanding, enabling him to deliver improbable assists and score impressive goals. If he can stay fit, he could be the key to Spurs securing a top-four finish this season.

This season, Spurs’ surprise package has been Welshman Brennan Johnson, who has scored in seven of his last eight appearances for club and country. He has managed twenty-six shots and been involved in six big chances. Postecoglou’s side seems to be playing to Johnson’s strengths, and his consistency across all competitions has been pivotal to Spurs’ results. With the next three fixtures for Spurs looking favourable, Johnson will be eager to continue his goalscoring run.

Another revelation on the side is Dejan Kulusevski. Scoring twice and assisting once so far this Premier League season, he is becoming a star in this Spurs midfield. Playing in his favoured central-attacking midfielder role, Kulusevski has increasingly influenced the games he has been involved in. His role in this Spurs side is not to be underestimated.

Lastly, Spurs’ new frontman and record signing Dominic Solanke has managed two goals and one assist. After an injury that kept him out of clashes against Everton and Newcastle, Solanke found a recent run of form, which saw him score in back-to-back fixtures against Brentford and Manchester United. With the abundance of talent in Spurs’ midfield this season, Solanke has sometimes struggled to make an impact. However, he is still settling into his new side, and I’m sure it won’t be long before he finds his feet. His nineteen goals last season with Bournemouth demonstrate that he is a top-class striker. If he can partner with maestro James Maddison, his attacking output will be frightening.

Ange Postecoglou’s dynamic style of football has made Tottenham one of the most exciting sides to watch in this season’s Premier League Campaign. With Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Ipswich Town in their next three matches, Tottenham’s attack will surely continue to flourish and provide goals to help the side climb back into the top four.
