As we approach the halfway stage in the Championship this season, we take a look at the leading candidates for the golden boot and see who we think is going to be the top scorer come to the end of the season.

All views are my own and if you disagree, let me know in the comments section.

  1. Aleksandar Mitrović (22 goals)

Having recently picked up his third consecutive PFA Fans’ Player of the Month, Fulham’s Mitrović is currently leading the goal scoring charts in the Championship with 22 goals and is causing defenders nightmares. Mitrović, who scored a last-minute winner to send Serbia to the World Cup, already has two hat tricks to his name and has also provided a further five assists.

Fulham is currently the top scorers in the division with 51 goals and 43% of them have come from Mitrović. The forward is averaging 1.08 goals a game and is well on course to break Brentford’s Ivan Toney’s Championship record of 31 goals in the 2020-21 season.

2. Ben Brereton Díaz (17 goals)

Blackburn Rovers forward Brereton Díaz has enjoyed a fantastic breakthrough season and currently has 17 goals to his name. He is averaging a goal every 110 minutes and has been involved in 45% of Rovers goals this season.

After noticing he was half Chilean whilst playing Football Manager, a group of fans began a social media campaign to get Brereton picked for Chile. The forward has become a cult hero in South America and has scored three goals in nine games for his country. The Rovers man has been linked with a move away from Ewood Park in January, with reports suggesting that Brighton are willing to pay a fee of £20 million for the 22-year-old.

3. Dominic Solanke (16 goals)

Formerly of Chelsea and Liverpool, Solanke joined Bournemouth in 2019. Since The Cherries relegation to the Championship Solanke has found his goal-scoring touch and has 31 goals in 61 league games. Having already beaten his tally for last season the forward has become a real handful and has scored important goals against Fulham and Birmingham City.

With one England cap to his name, Solanke is averaging a goal every 122 minutes and has been involved in 43% of their league goals this season. If Bournemouth want to continue their top two pursuits, they will need their main man to keep firing them in.

4. Joël Piroe (11 goals)

Having arrived from Dutch side PSV in the summer, there was huge pressure on new Swansea City signing Piroe as he had to replace André Ayew and Jamal Lowe’s goals. The striker has 11 goals to his name this season and has become a fan favourite scoring against rivals Cardiff City and Bristol City.

Costing a reported £1m, with the potential to rise up to £2m, Piroe looks to have been a steal for the Welsh side. He already has 11 goals and four assists for the Swans and has been involved in 42% of Swans goals this season.

5. Elijah Adebayo (10 goals)

Having signed from League Two side Walsall at the beginning of February, Luton Town’s Adebayo has taken the Championship by storm and has scored 15 goals in 38 appearances. The striker has enjoyed a fine start to this season where he currently has 10 goals already.

Adebayo worked his way up the football pyramid and has the ability to be in the right place at the right time. He is averaging a goal every 165 minutes. The 23-year-old has been involved in 32% of The Hatters goals and is on course to play a big part in their season as they hope to make a late playoff push.

With half the season still remaining it will be interesting to see who tops the Championship scoring charts at the end of the season.
