The LIGA NOS, Portugal’s Premier futebol league began this week. Benfica, Porto and Sporting all won to begin their season on a positive note.

S.L. Benfica start the season off right

Benfica has currently played three competitive games, as they also played a home and home in the UEFA Champions League qualifying stage. Fenerbache were their opponents and they were able to advance on aggregate with a victory and a tie. The first regular season game was against Vitoria. The Eagles got off to a torrid start as they scored three goals in the first half and were ahead 3-0 at halftime. Pizzi who was awarded the man of the match had all three goals for Benfica before Vitoria came back with two goals of their own to make the game interesting. They were able to hang on for the 3-2 victory but fans who were expecting a blowout had to hang on as they got the narrow victory. Their next matchup is away against Boavista.

F.C. Porto begins with a blowout

After winning the Super Cup of Portugal with a 3-1 win versus Alves, the regular season began strong for the defending LIGA NOS champions. The Dragons took the lead and never looked back as they defeated Chaves 5-0 for their first win. Abubakar had two goals in the first half to give them s comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime. Two more goals in the second half put the game away as Porto started the season just as they ended last season. The next opponent is on the road versus Belenenses.

Sporting C.P. follows through with win

After having a tumultuous off season, the team was looking for some kind of normalcy. To be on the pitch playing games, it may be the best solution for the team to get back on track. After multiple players rescinding their contracts with the team and the president being forced to step down, the win gave supporters smiles that were badly needed. It definitely didn’t start off well as they fell behind 6 minutes into the game. Moreirense opened the scoring but the Lions took over from that point with a 3-1 win. BasDost followed his scoring streak of last season with two goals in the second half. The next matchup is at home against Setubal.

As has been the norm in Portugal, it seems like the title race will fall once again between these three teams.
