The Indianapolis Colts have traded quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders.

The Colts will receive the Commanders’ third-round draft picks in 2022 and 2023. However, the 2023 third-rounder can become a second-round selection if Wentz plays 70% of Washington’s snaps next season.

The teams also swapped second-round picks in 2022, with the Colts moving up from No. 47 overall to No. 42.

The trade comes only a day after the Broncos traded for Seahawks QB Russel Wilson who the Commanders were reportedly in the market for. The Commander allegedly offered three first-round picks for the Wilson but was turned down by Seattle’s front office.

Washington was certainly in need of a new quarterback, considering they have put up some of the worst numbers in the last few years. Washington owns the NFL’s worst total QBR since the 2018 season and its 71 touchdown passes in that span also rank 32nd.

Wentz will replace the Commander’s current starting QB Taylor Heinicke. Heinicke went 7-8 as Washington’s starter last season, throwing for 3,419 yards with 20 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions.

Wentz has been on a downwards spiral since tearing his ACL in 2017 and then losing the Eagle’s starting role to Jason Hurts in 2020. Wentz had a solid year with the Colts as he threw 27 touchdown passes and tied his career-low in interceptions with seven last season. However, after claims from inside the organization of a lack of leadership and drive, Indianapolis looked to move on, and Wentz will be hoping this move can rejuvenate his NFL career.

The former MVP candidate’s departure from the Colts means that the search for stability in Indianapolis continues. Since the retirement of Andrew Luck in 2019, the Colts have had five starting quarterbacks in five seasons, something the other players don’t mind being known.

The rumor mill has already begun and the Colts are being heavily linked with 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo who is actively searching for a trade away from San Francisco.
