Tuesday night’s round of Champions League fixtures did not disappoint, with fantastic performances and huge scorelines for some sides.
Superb Sporting
Sporting Lisbon blew Manchester City out of the water after their 4-1 victory in Lisbon. Swedish goal machine Victor Gyokeres stole the headlines after his impressive hat-trick, bolstering his goal tally to 5 goals in 4 matches. Despite Manchester City taking a very early lead through Phil Foden and having 73% of possession, Erling Haaland’s penalty miss midway through the second half was one of many chances missed in a frustrating night for the current Premier League holders. This result gives Manchester City their 3rd defeat in a row in all competitions, whereas Sporting Lisbon keeps up their unbelievable, unbeaten run this season.
Big Loss For Leverkusen
After a tight first-half display, Bayer Leverkusen became no match for Liverpool, who went on to score four second-half goals to win 4-0, thanks to a Luis Diaz hat-trick and a Cody Gakpo header. Liverpool now become the first team to win four games out of four so far, leaving them top of the table and in a fantastic position. Bayer Leverkusen sit in 11th after their first defeat in this year’s competition.
Milan Silence the Santiago Bernabeu
AC Milan pulled off the night’s shock, going to Champions League holders Real Madrid and beating them 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Milan emerged victorious in an entertaining, end-to-end affair, with 37 shots taken altogether. An early lead from Milan’s Malick Thiaw was shortly ruled out after a Vinicius Junior penalty levelled the game. Former Real Madrid man Alvaro Morata then gave Milan the lead for the second time before half-time, pouncing on Lunin’s parried save. With 15 minutes left, Milan sealed the game after Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders slotted it through Lunin’s legs. This result leaves AC Milan in 18th, and Real Madrid drops into 17th.
Celtic Cruise Past Leipzig
Celtic achieved their second Champions League victory this season in an impressive 3-1 win at home against German side RB Leipzig. Thanks to Christoph Baumgartner’s header, Leipzig took the lead midway through the first half. However, Celtic turned things around, scoring twice in 10 minutes before half-time. Celtic then completed their victory with 20 minutes left, and Reo Hatate capitalised on Peter Gulacsi’s mistake. RB Leipzig remain winless and 31st, whereas Celtic find themselves 13th and level on points with 6th place, Manchester City.
